Gear guides or gear lists are always useful to help decided which gear you should be going after. Some have said that simply relying on iLvL is sufficient to judge which piece of gear is better over the other. However I for one need something more accurate or informative. Informative in the sense that I am easily capable of picking out which of the two items is the best depending on stats and not iLvL. This is where stat weights come into play, but choosing the right set of stat weights is not an easy task. Some stat weights lean towards throughput, others lean towards sustainability, and some mix and match. So which is the right stat for you? Well that depends on play style and content.

So where are we going with all of this? If you’ve never heard of Rawr or used it, then it may be time for you to take a look at it. It’s a small program or tool that allows you to easily compare gear depending on various options you set. It runs a small simulator with the gear you have selected and depending on the length of the fight it will tell you wish item is best for that encounter. Using an average time length will help you choose between different sets of gear and optimize it (via enchants and gems) to improve your overall performance. One thing I’ve noticed about Rawr is that it will ensure that you have sufficient mana/regen to last the encounter rather then telling you to stack spellpower/crit/haste. Hence sustainability over throughput until your gear is capable of lasting an encounter. From personal experience I must say that this application is very handy to have around and help ‘optimize’ your gear for the current content.

Play style was not mentioned in the previous paragraph, but surprisingly your also able to tell Rawr which spells you use more often in order to get an accurate comparison of gear. There are numerous amounts of features/options in Rawr that once properly set will give you a more personal experience. Of course it takes time to figure out what everything does, and I myself still don’t use every last bit of Rawr (after 2 months). Fortunately for us Rawr works just fine out the box, but I intend to make a small guide to explore and help us use Rawr more efficiently.

Of course Rawr is not required to help us choose gear and gear lists still exists (mine to be updated to 3.2). One add-on I highly recommend is Pawn to quickly compare gear in-game via stat weights used in our favorite gear lists.

I’d like to thank BobTurkey for the great effort he’s put into his recent posts on priest theory crafting found on his blog. He has taken the time to rework DwarfPriests stat weights to coincide with the recent 3.1 patch and allow us to come up with a list of BiS gear for us to choose from. With the changes to the discipline tree it seems that everyone had made the change from holy to disc and has been having too much fun to crunch some numbers (like myself ). Anyhow the following list of gear uses BobTurkey’s stat weights and lootrank to obtain the rankings. Please note I’ve inserted a -500 value to hit rating in order to exclude +hit gear. Keep in mind the following list is gear from Ulduar 10&25, Sarth 10&25, Malygos 10&25, Naxx 10&25, and 5man heroics. The higher the value the better the gear is considered. However if you are lacking on a certain stat then you should gear to fill the stat you are missing. There is also a great application called Rawr that will help you optimize your gear. Originally it was meant for druid tanks but they have expanded the application to include the majority of classes and specs. Will be updated with MMO-Champions Ulduar Hardmode items.

The following gear list & value came from LootRank using TheDoctor’s stat weights posted on Elitist Jerks. If you are curious to how these numbers came about take a look at TheDoctor’s post (he will be posting a spreadsheet soon). Keep in mind the following list is gear from Ulduar 10&25, Sarth 10&25, Malygos 10&25, and Naxx 10&25. The higher the value the better the gear is considered. However if you are lacking on a certain stat then you should gear to fill the stat you are missing. There is also a great application called Rawr that will help you optimize your gear. Originally it was meant for druid tanks but they have expanded the application to include the majority of classes and specs. Holy Gear list will follow in the next couple of days. Updated as requested: Item values noted in purple were updated on 4/27/09 with mmo-champion info. Items are still not available on wowhead hence they may change. Also the item values were calculated by hand using the above stated stat weights. Since the items are not yet available on wowhead I will number them based on the item they are between (ie, 1.5 if between 1 and 2).
